KALKAN

You will find Kalkan (= Turkish turbot) at a lovely bay at the Mediterranean sea, along the South coast road Fethiye - Antalya.
The idyllic place - originally a Greek fisherman village - is surrounded at three sites by the green Taurus mountains.

Kalkan is situated in the area which once belonged to the Lycian empire, a very old civilisation, several impressive excavations remained.

With its 3000 inhabitants Kalkan is an unique Turkish village with an air of a city. They are fond of the "easy going" lifestyle which is in harmony with the climate. During the last 2 decades people from all over Turkey and also from (West)Europe have decided to live in Kalkan.

Kalkan is build against the green mountains. Walking through the old centre along the small sloppy streets you will find among the lovely white authentic houses decorated with bougainvilleas and oleanders, some well restored old Greek houses. You will recognise the Kalkan houses by its wooden balconies and its typical façade. Many people left the old centre and moved to modern houses at the periphery, their old houses accommodate many fancy restaurants, interesting shops and lots of terraces, which features the nice and relaxing atmosphere of Kalkan.

In the picturesque harbour you will find amongst fisher boats and sailing yachts traditional Turkish boats which offer daily trips to the sea. Kalkan has its own pebble beach with sun beds & umbrellas.

Fortunately Kalkan kept its own identity, the absence of huge hotels -instead there is an interesting variety of "small" quality hotels- has refreain the "Turkey tourists rush".
